Function：The idler arm assembly provides pivot support to the steering linkage. It consists of a rod that rotates on a bracket bolted to the vehicle frame at one end and supports the ball socket at the other end. Usually, an idler arm is connected between the pitman arm and the other side of the center link of the frame to keep the center link at a proper height so that the movement of the pitman arm can be accurately transmitted. The idler arm is usually more prone to wear than the steering rocker arm because the idler arm has a built-in pivot function.
How do you know when it’s time to replace your idler arm? If the idler arm or pitman arm is damaged or faulty when you turn the steering wheel, your vehicle may not respond correctly.
